INSPIRATION: Lindsey Buckingham may have a new solo album (and a tour that has him at the Music Hall on Oct. 8), but who can forget his tempestuous relationship with Fleetwood Mac bandmate Stevie Nicks? They came together for the ’70s singer/songwriter cult album Buckingham Nicks, and their coke-fuelled breakup inspired much of the material on 1977’s Rumours while setting the bar for tortuous breakups occurring within a band.

They first met in high school: Nicks saw Buckingham strumming “California Dreaming” at a Young Life meeting (“[It] was a religious meeting that simply got you out of the house on Wednesday nights,” she recalls) and threw in a Michelle Phillips harmony. Two years later, Buckingham invited her to join his band, Fritz, an opener for Jimi Hendrix and other San Francisco “free love”–embracing bands. Body Shop Patchouli Perfume Oil, $16. The Body Shop (100 Bloor W., 416-928-1180, www.thebodyshop.ca).

Fritz broke up, and the now-lovers decided to form a duo. Their debut, Buckingham Nicks, was released in 1973 but sold poorly. Money was tight: when they shot the skin-baring cover shot, Nicks had spent her last $111 on a blouse that the photographer told her to ditch (and soon after, she established her infamous Dickens-street-urchin image). Kiehl’s Superbly Restorative Body Lotion, $48. Kiehl’s (407 Queen W., 416-977-3588, www.kiehls.com).

Luckily, Mick Fleetwood became a fan (of the music, not their long, high-maintenance manes). The flowing-haired duo joined Fleetwood Mac as a “package deal,” but touring, recording, excess oil and product buildup led to their breakup. At least their hair still looked great on Rumours. Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo Spray, $11. Sephora (220 Yonge, 416-595-7227, www.sephora.com).
